Occurrence remarks | Tree, c. 35 m high. Trunk with small buttresses up to 1 m height. Trunk cylindrical, DBH 105 cm. Bark brownish grey with elliptic lenticels. Older branches greyish brown with brown lenticels, young branches greyish green. Leafrachis pale green. Leaflets leathery, upper side glossy, dark green, lower side dull, greyish green. In not sunexposed leaves the lower leafside is somewhat glossy and medium green. Peduncle greyish brown, terminal branches greenish white, all with dark brown hairs. Bracts greenish white, on the outer side with dark brown hairs. Pedicel white, sometimes pinkish. Bracteoles white, on outer side with brown hairs. Fused adaxial sepals white to pink-red with brown hairs. Petal white. Filaments white, but tube on inner side at base purple-red to deep purple, anthers purple, old anthers dark purple. The two stamens next to the adaxial one are bended inwards, producing a circle of 8 anthers with two in the middle. Pollen yellowish white. Some flowers with not well developed style-less white ovaries. Normal ovaries pink, densely covered by most white and a few brown hairs. Style white. Stigma pale yellow. Old pods in the tree (but easely breaking) and on the floor. These with brown indumentum and purple brown wood. Flowers sweet-fragrant. Flowers visited by at least 4 species of bees (Honeybee (Apis melifera), 'Moucheron', and two other species), by a hoverfly (Syrphidae) and two species of butterflies (one Lycaenidae, other probably Papilionidae). The Honeybees and 'Moucherons' were only visiting the anthers, they showed no interest at all in the receptacle of the flower. Freshly fallen pods found, one collected, under this tree in first week of februari 1995 by T. Esser. |
