Additional properties

Organism remarks Stemless palm, 2.3 m high. Leaves 2.6 m long, with 18-20 pairs of leaflets. Petiole c. 80 cm long. Leaflets leathery, upper side somewhat glossy, dark green, lower side dull, pale greenish grey. Leaf rachis green, at base brown, surrounded by a fibrous sheet. Infructescence more or less underground, in mud between the leaf bases, c. 10 cm high. All fruits opened by gorillas, obovoid, c. 4 x 3 cm, dark red, each containing a single, very hard brown seed, that is globose, inside translucent, bony and tastes after coconut endosperm, but is very, very hard.
